Corneal diseases

The cornea is the most exposed part of the eye to suffer injuries by the action of external agents. Various diseases of the cornea can alter its characteristics and cause defective vision.

Corneal problems include refractive errors such as astigmatism but also infections, injuries, allergies.

It is a non-inflammatory disorder deforming the cornea which causes a variable visual impairment.

The cornea increases its slope and thins, this produces myopia and irregular astigmatism: in advanced stages, the cornea assumes a conical shape, hence the term keratoconus.

The pterygium is an abnormal growth of tissue on the cornea, anterior surface of the eye which is normally transparent and blood vessels.

Treatment depends on the size of the pterygium, whether it is growing and the symptoms it causes. Regardless of severity, pterygiums must be controlled to avoid scarring that could lead to loss of vision.
